Figma Design System

Garmin
Project Overview
At the start of 2021 our team grew to a point where working in sketch without live collaboration was hindering our workflow. Figma was the clear choice of tool given a number of teams within the company had began the switch from Sketch. For many on my team this change was intimidating given our long time usage of Sketch, relatively siloed workflow, and new vocabulary within the software. Our decided plan was to phase Sketch out over a period of 6-8 month while having biweekly Figma education meetings where features could be shared and questions could be brought up. In reality, the move to Figma took the team two months after members felt confident in their abilities, learned the potential of the tool, and began sharing work live with stakeholders. Moving out design libraries from Sketch to Figma was its own task that involved learning the complete potential of the tool available to us at the time. Our team used roughly four product specific libraries as well as leaned on libraries supported by out graphic design department. Ensuring that all teams involved were speaking the same language was essential to our successful transition. At this point in time my team manages more than eight design system files and aids the graphic design department in maintaining and proofing their extensive library of icons and assets.
My Contributions
Procurement
As the only member of the team with experience in Figma I championed our transition to Figma. From the beginning this included taking part in negotiations with Figma and IT to secure licenses and approve the tool for all internal use. Figma migration meetings were organized and led by me where I acted as our local subject matter expert for teams interested in migrating their workflow to Figma from Sketch/Abstract. Guidelines for global administrators, editors, and viewed was created by a small team include me and distributed on our intranet.

Onboarding
Serving as local tool expert meant providing the education and assistance needed for our teams to be successful in integrating Figma into our workflows. This included producing training videos, leading workshops, and constructing templates for designers. Subjects included embedding Figma frames on intranet documentation pages, building a successful component library, designing for export, essentials for asynchronous work, live collaboration, vector editing, advanced type setting, and file structure.
Libraries
Once integration of Figma was well underway my focus shifted to designing and managing libraries that facilitated fast HiFi design and turn around. Building these libraries was a cross platform initiative that involved our graphic design team which spans all internal segments. Structuring the libraries took the UX perspective of designing for our target user and their use case. Managing and updating libraries was scheduled to happen weekly on Thursday afternoon so to build a stable cadence of updates. I continue to manage a number of libraries within our organization that span all product lines and business segments.
Beyond
More recently I have been aiding new migration teams build successful libraries and tools. Our aviation segment made the transition recently and I helped train their designers to get the most out of the tool. In addition, I have taken on a position of leading workshops through FigJam to improve our early development and planning on products to increase transparency and efficiency amongst products designers and managers.
